Copia, which is Latin for "abundance", was founded by Silicon Valley veterans, Tracey Turner and Jonathan Lewis and launched in 2013. Their vision was to bring the power of e-commerce to the middle and base of the economic pyramid, transforming this historically neglected market into empowered global consumers. Starting in Kenya, where Tracey previously lived, they envisioned “e” where there is no internet, commerce where there are no big wallets, deliveries where there are no modern roads or addresses and empowered people where the world sees none.

Founder & Chairman
Tracey is a well known social entrepreneur who founded three companies before starting Copia.But her most challenging job is serving as mom to three tiny kids and one large dog. In her free time she has killed a few brain cells completing 11 Ironmans. Tracey holds a degree in engineering and economics from Dartmouth College and an MBA from Stanford Business School.
Shakir oversees the investment activities of LGT Impact across Sub-Saharan Africa. He previously managed the Africa Healthcare Fund and has also been responsible for growing investment value in sectors including logistics, banking, manufacturing and unashamedly, fashion retail. His prior experience includes doing early stage investing in technology businesses in Western Europe as well as strategy consulting for the Monitor Company and Coopers & Lybrand.
Jerry has served as a board member of Copia since its founding. He has been a successful entrepreneur, executive and investor in Silicon Valley for over 40 years where he has been involved in managing all growth stages of companies from conception to multi-billion-dollar global enterprises. He enjoys travel, photography, many sports and spending time with his family.
Isaac has considerable experience in the financial services industry having worked for more than 30 years in the Kenyan and regional banking industry.
He is currently the Group Managing Director of Commercial Bank of Africa Limited (“CBA Group”) the largest privately held commercial bank in Kenya with a regional focus, presently also operating in Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda and Ivory Coast. CBA Group is one of the strongest and ethically managed commercial banks’ offering a comprehensive range of banking services, including Mobile and Digitally enabled financial solutions and is recognised as the market leader in the provision of Mobile Lending and Savings solutions, in partnership with Safaricom (Kenya), Vodacom (Tanzania) and MTN (Uganda, Rwanda and Ivory Coast). CBA Group presently serves in excess of 35 million customers in its five markets.
Prior to joining CBA Group (more than 23 years ago) Isaac was Chief Financial Officer and director at Standard Chartered Bank Kenya Ltd operations in Kenya and the East Africa region for over 8 years.
Isaac graduated from University of Nairobi in 1980 with a Bachelor of Commerce degree in accounting and finance. He trained at BDO Binder Hamlyn in London qualifying as a chartered accountant in 1984. On his return to Kenya he worked with the firm of Githongo and Company (a BDO affiliate) as an Audit Manager in 1985. In 1986 he was appointed Group Auditor of Nation Printers and Publishers Limited (now the Nation Media Group) and eventually became the Group Financial Controller and Company Secretary.
Isaac is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW), the Institute of Certified Public Accounts of Kenya (ICPAK) and Fellow of the Kenya Institute of Management.
Isaac sits on the Board of several public and private organisations, including Kenya Airports Authority (Chairman), Kenya Cultural Centre, Bata Shoes Company Kenya Limited, Aidspan (Chairman) and Riara University (Chairman of Council). Through his involvement in charitable and philanthropic activities, he is Chairman of the Kenya Conservatoire of Music, University of Nairobi Alumni Association, The Rhino Trust, a conservation charity involved in preservation of environmental biodiversity, and WWF Kenya, and Trustee of the Zawadi Africa Education Fund, an educational charity which provides scholarship support to disadvantaged girls from Africa (and presently operating in Kenya, Uganda, South Africa and Ghana) to Universities mainly in the US, South Africa, Ghana and Canada and more recently the UK and Japan.
He is a keen golfer, enjoys music and is a collector of contemporary African Art, an area of interest for more than 30 years.
Peter Van As
A Dutchman born and raised in Latin America, Peter has a Masters in Economics from Erasmus University. For the last 20 years of his career he has worked all over Africa (23 markets!) for Unilever, DIAGEO, Smollan & SCANAD and Phatisa – where he is currently Senior Partner. Peter has lived in Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Tanzania, Kenya, South Africa and Mauritius and has been a Copia board member since the beginning. Happiness to him is being on the ground and rolling up his sleeves.
Ms Betty Muthoni Mwangi is the Group Commercial Director at Britam Holdings Plc having joined on 1st December 2016. The Commercial Division is tasked with the distribution of Britam General Insurance, Life and Asset Management solutions through 2000 or so financial Advisors, 32 Branches, Bancassurance and Digital and Direct Channels. The division is also tasked with driving Innovation at Britam with Ms Mwangi as the Champion.
Betty has over twenty years’ experience gained from working in various industries amongst them telecommunications, pharmaceuticals and insurance.
Prior to this position, Betty was the Director, Financial Services for Safaricom Ltd for nine years, holding several roles including Innovation and New product development. Ms Mwangi was also at the helm of leading the world renowned M-PESA from its inception. Other positions held in the past include Chief Marketing Officer, AFSAT Communications Africa, Managing Director, Medex Marketing Limited, and Demand and Special Project Manager, GlaxoSmithKline.
In 2010, Betty was recognized by Mobile Communications International as one of the top 10 most influential women in mobile telecommunication globally, and in 2011 and 2013, she was recognized as one of the TOP 20 most powerful African Women in ICT by the ITNewsAfrica
Betty holds a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from Victoria University, Manchester, and an MBA from the University of Leicester, both in the UK. She is also a Chartered Marketer with the Chartered Institute of Marketing.

Chief Executive Officer
Tim is British, has a finance background and 25 years transport and service industry experience leading diverse teams to deliver quality service and fast growth in emerging markets. Tim has lived in 6 and worked in over 50 countries. He loves travel (obviously!) and tries to stay fit by mountain biking and hiking.
VP Supply Chain and Logistics
Ken is responsible for Copia’s Warehousing and Logistics operations. He is an experienced supply chain specialist with experience across multiple industries including consumer goods, retail, technology and telecommunications with companies such as Coca Cola, Nestle and Safaricom. He is also a strong technology professional who has a track record of SAP ERP deployments in East Africa. He is an E-Commerce enthusiast who is inquisitive about mobile technology. He is also a father, husband and professional thespian who enjoys travel as well as going to the gym!
Director of Procurement & Partnerships
Kevin Muasya is a procurement professional with a Kaizen mind and reputation for building and growing ethical, intelligent and versatile procurement departments across various industries; FMCG (GlaxoSmithKline), E-Commerce (Jumia Kenya) and PAYGO (M-KOPA Solar - Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania). Kevin is an active member of the Chartered institute of Procurement and Supply (CIPS) and the Kenya Institute of Supplies Management (KISM).
Kevin holds an MSc-Procurement and Logistics from JKUAT, CIPS Level 4, CPA Part 2, and a Bachelor of Commerce-Procurement and Supply Chain Management from the University of Nairobi. He has also been certified by the World Bank Open Learning Center- e-Procurement, by AMSCO- Negotiate like A Pro and by the UN Office on Drugs and Crime-The Fight Against Corruption.
Kevin is married and is an outdoor lover, an active footballer and enjoys rugby. He takes pride in disrupting the norms and enjoys serving the less-fortunate, marginalized and what Copia has aptly described as ‘’the base of the pyramid.’’ He looks forward to offering a 360-degree view across the sourcing channel and implementing the five rights of procurement across the business.
With over 10 years of Project Management experience, and a PRINCE2 Project Management Certification, Lizzie is a seasoned Project Manager. Copia’s use of technology and embracing of processes to guide growth means projects are always being launched and implemented to keep up with innovation within the company. Lizzie enjoys reading - anything really, books, articles, magazines, tweets, anything so long as it’s interesting!
Chief Financial Officer
Dominic is responsible for all financial aspects of Copia’s business that drive the execution of the company’s long term vision. He has spent the last 20 years in financial, strategic and business development roles in 3 different continents and is a sports enthusiast with a particular passion for rugby.
Catherine is a seasoned Marketing profession, having worked in the Marketing field for over 18 years. Catherine has worked in B2B Marketing in the UK with Pilkington Group Limited, Kawneer PLC and FMCG firms, such as Coca-Cola and Safaricom. She is an award winning Marketer with the Marketing Society of Kenya and Advertising Practitioner Awards for excellence in marketing campaigns.
Catherine enjoys travelling, reading (when she gets the chance!), teaching children Bible study which she does every Monday evening and spending time mucking around with her three children.
Catherine will be responsible for creating, shaping and executing our Marketing strategy. She is looking forward to spearheading the growth of the Copia brand into a globally renowned life transforming, caring brand that provides underserved customers in Kenya and future markets, with access to a quality and convenient retail shopping experience through our current Agent network and e-Commerce platform.
Head of Engineering
Kahungo is tasked with the responsibility of understanding Copia’s strategic vision and seeking out technologies to fulfill that vision for the benefit of the business. As a hands-on operator, he develops systems that control costs, increase efficiencies and optimise processes. He is married, has four kids, likes animals, enjoys playing hockey and traveling around the world.
Chief Growth Officer
Nikki is tasked with growing Copia’s revenue and ensuring the engagement and growth of all our Agents and Customers. Providing innovative solutions to low-income customers is challenging but rewarding! After a career in large, multi-national companies around the world, she loves living in Kenya and enjoying the amazing travel and outdoor opportunities.
Business Development & Replication, Founding CEO
Crispin is a Kenyan born serial entrepreneur who spent many years in the US. In 2012 he moved back to Kenya to get Copia up and running. Once the concept was rooted and seeded for growth, Crispin moved back to the US and is currently focused on ideating and testing high value revenue streams that leverage Copia’s distribution network as well as determining how to migrate the business model to other countries. Crispin enjoys golfing, fishing, running, (hopefully soon) skiing and anything technology and sci-fi. He holds a degree in Economics and Physics from Bowdoin and a MBA from Harvard Business School.
Human Resources Manager
Anne provides HR leadership and management to the business and is fully responsible for the company’s HR operations such as developing HR processes and policies, compliance, employee relations, performance management, recruiting, benefits, compensation and maintaining a highly engaged work force. Besides being a HR generalist, she is a foodie, loves interior designing and travels to fuel her soul.
